Los Castros – Construction of 28 homes
The community of Los Castros is located just outside the town of Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua. It is a beautiful part of the country. It is only 12-14 minutes away at H.O.P.E. Central, our Project H.O.P.E. base. Previous teams from Second Baptist Church of Springfield have constructed 20 homes in March 2005 and 12 homes in March 2006. This community received 28 additional homes in 2007, bringing the total to 60 homes. Three volunteer teams worked side-by-side the Nicaraguan families to build their new homes. The mayor of Mateare has shown us the survey of that community. There are a grand total of 200 lots available for homes. Project H.O.P.E. could very well be working in Los Castros again in the future!
The photos posted here are a few from the March 24-31 team. In addition to construction, time was spent daily in small-group Bible study; seeing patients at the medical clinic; treating dental patients; sharing with women during the morning Women’s Time; teaching the kids of the community during afternoon Kids’ Time; plus a lot of good ‘ole visiting!
Summary of 2007 teams in Los Castros:
- March 24-31 at team from Fellowship Bible Church (Rogersville, MO), Second Baptist Church (Springfield, MO), First Baptist Church (Dexter, MO), First Baptist Church (Marianna, FL) and others from Kimberling City, St. Louis, Kansas City and Atlanta, GA broke ground.
- August 4-11 a first-time team from United Methodist Church Lee’s Summit, Missouri
- September 1-8 a team of volunteers from East Grand Church of Christ, Springfield and Second Baptist Church, Springfield.
At a cost of $2,000 per house, this project ran $56,000.
Xiloa – July 10-17 – Construction of a school building – The Lorene Breeden Facility
A team of 27 volunteers from Springfield, Branson, Kimberling City, Dexter, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, GA and Marianna, FL was assembled to construct a desperately needed building. Just take a look at the photos of their current structure. The name of this Christian program is “Shepherd My Lambs School.” There are 196 children, ages 3-12 years, who attend this after-school program Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are eight teachers. The teachers’ salaries, school operational costs and supplies for the children are provided by Compassion International; however, the organization does not fund construction. That is where Project H.O.P.E. came into play. You can see from the pictures above, the kids were in desperate need of a new facility. The latrines really needed work, and they needed a new kitchen for preparing snacks and meals for the kids. God has provided a donor to cover all construction costs. The structure will be in memory of Lorene Breeden of Springfield. If you still want to help, the kids would love to have some playground equipment. Call 417-886-4673 or email Stacey@pjhope.org to find out how you can be a part of blessing these kids.
Diriamba – Construction of 25 homes
The community of Diriamba is located south of Managua, Nicaragua. It is a lovely town, complete with a town square. The mayor is one of the friendliest with which Project H.O.P.E. has had the pleasure to work. Diriamba is 45-50 minutes away from H.O.P.E. Central, our Project H.O.P.E. base. A team of volunteers from Calvary Baptist, Republic, First Baptist, Republic and volunteers from the Springfield Police Department worked to construct 25 homes in a tiny community. The same basic group of volunteers, under the leadership of Steve Ijames, completed 25 homes in August 2002 and 18 homes in July 2006. The additional 25 homes in 2007 brought this particular community’s total to 68 homes.
